Rearing A Happy and Healthy Puppy
Temperament testing and observation play key roles in the placement of puppies at LEGARD. We meticulously test each puppy to evaluate what type of home is proper. My approach is to look to understand what buyers want to do with their Doberman and then match up the puppies according to the buyers’ needs. Every puppy is differnt in every litter, I have never seen two puppies with idenitical personalitys. Each puppy is graded on his or her own merits and tested on numerous occasions under differnt surroundings for a more accurate grade.
Puppies are born and raised in my home. The first week the new litter is supervised around the clock and monitered to ensure proiper nutrition, weight gain and overall health as well as ensuring mom is keeping them clean and happy as well. Somone is never farhter than a few rooms away the first week. They have their own room for the entire time they live with me, and are socialized with my adult dogs after they reach 4 weeks. Each puppy will have his or her own crate by the time they reach seven weeks old and begin learning the basics of potty training alone with separation from MOM and siblings. They are placed togehter outside if weather permits durring the day for playtime activitys and each night are brought back inside for crating and bedtime.
Our puppy's are groomed weekly, nails trimmed and bathed and ears cleaned. They learn early that this is a normal routine and they soon begin looking forward to all the special attention. Durring the grooming we are also checking for clear eyes, soft healthy skin and coat, as well as checking for any external parasites, such as fleas' . Durring summer months once our puppys are old enought to begin the daily routine of going outdoors a few hours each day, We also begin them on the Frontline Flea prevention program from six weeks of age.
All puppies are temperament tested and matched to prospective owners. Puppies are also exposed to different surfaces to play on; such as carpet, grass, gravel, asphalt, concrete, linoleum, hardwood floors, tile, etc.
Each puppy is individually played with and held daily and taught to establish a loving relationship with people. They are introduced to car rides at 6 weeks and go for their first car rides with their littermates. This helps to reduce any fear they may have of being in a moving vehicle. It also prepares them for going home with their new owners.
After cropping (AT 6 WEEKS) they begin crate-training. This also facilitates their transition to their new homes and when they arrive at their new homes there should be no crying. At 7 weeks, they are introduced to lead-breaking and house-breaking.
Socialization starts at birth with adults and children of all ages, to establish a good foundation before they go to their new homes at about 10 –12 weeks.
After the puppies have been cropped, they are separated in order to develop independence; they sleep in a crate alone. However, they continue to play with their littermates and our adult dogs.
Our Show Potential Puppy's are taught to stand and be examined on stacking tables, and are "Stacked" and handled daily to help them feel comftarable doing this and make this a fun thing to do. We also begin lead training between 5 7 weeks of age in- between the ear cropping.
We begin the basics in imprinting our Working Potential puppy's very early on, Which is important for a solid charchter and good foundation for a proper balance of drives and nerve, We begin in the whelping box with introducing all of our puppys to a wide range of sounds so that they are not sensitve to things such as thunder, gun fire and other loud noises, including crowds and sirens.
Little coneheads: this phase won't last long; it is merely part of the ear taping process , The plastic cone is a wonderful aid in allowing the suture part of freshly cropped ears to heal much faster without increased risk of infections and soreness.
Our Puppy's are supervised in play on a daily basis, to ensure proper in home manners and discourage furniture chewing and bad habits before they begin. We beleive that a strong beging is the foundation to the puppys future behavior as well as good breeding and gentics.
Our puppy's are given a complete exam and given a health certifcate by a liscensed Vetrinairan prior to shipping . All puppy's are current and up to date on all vaccinations and de-worming's prior to placement.
Puppies are guaranteed healthy and will be replaced if found genetically unsound. The LEGARD guarantee' are the strongest and best guarantee's we believe that you will find, anyplace!
All puppies are cropped and properly immunized before leaving.
All LeGard puppy's are pampered and loved on a daily basis and interact in home with our family.
